Work, New Friends, and a Night Out: A Day in the Life of a Student in Vienna

Image
Today, I woke up at 9:30 a.m. and worked at the reception in my student dorm until 4 p.m. I did a bit of everything, from changing mattresses in the rooms to leaving goody bags and making sure everything was ready for new residents. After work, I headed to my room, took a shower, and relaxed for a bit. At 5:30 p.m., I went to a meeting with most of my classmates from uni. I can’t say I enjoyed the first part because it was cold, and we were sitting on the wet grass in a park. But I did manage to make a new friend, and the two of us, along with two girls I met at a bar last Friday, went to a terrace in Stephansplatz for a drink. When I got home, I was starving, but my fridge was empty since I didn’t have time for groceries today, so I ordered some food and ate while watching a movie.

Autumn Vibes and Palace Views: A Lazy Day in Vienna

Image
Today, I woke up at 11 a.m. feeling really tired, so I went back to sleep until 2 p.m. I had stayed up until around 5 a.m. watching a movie. When I finally got out of bed, I saw that my sister had messaged me because we had planned to ride bikes through the city in the morning, but since I didn’t respond, she ended up going to the library to study. For brunch, I made myself an omelet, and around 4 p.m., I headed to Schönbrunn Palace to take some pictures of the beautiful exterior. I also wandered through a nearby park. Later, I came across a residential area that was absolutely stunning, with autumn leaves in shades of brown, red, and orange covering the ground. All the pictures I took during my walk will be posted on my TikTok page (@victorinvienna). In the evening, I met up with my sister in her room and helped her organize and clean her kitchen. Afterward, I went back to my room and baked some potatoes in the air fryer, topping them with cheddar, mozzarella, and spicy salami. They t...

Food, Friends, and a Dead Scooter: My Sunday in Vienna

Image
Today, I slept in until 11:30 a.m. since I went to bed at 4 a.m. When I woke up, I wasn’t in the mood to do much, but I got out of bed anyway because I don’t like staying in bed too long in the morning. I went to my sister’s room, and we decided to order food since neither of us felt like making breakfast. I got some delicious sushi, and she ordered rice with chicken. Around 3 p.m., I went back to my room, took a shower, and went for a ride on an e-scooter through the city, visiting some really cool spots, which I posted on my TikTok (@victorinvienna). During the ride, the scooter’s battery died, and with no other scooters around, I found myself an hour’s walk from the dorm. Luckily, there was a tram station nearby that dropped me off pretty close to the dorm. When I got back, I met up with my sister and her friend, and we went for a walk through a Thai street food festival, which I really enjoyed. We grabbed some food and headed back to my room to eat and have a little chat, which wra...

New Skills, New Friends: A Busy Day and a Night Out in Vienna

Image
Today, I woke up at 8:45 and went to work at the reception with my sister to learn the ropes, as I’ll be working there on the 30th of September and the 1st of October since they need extra staff. After work, I had a sandwich and then cleaned my room, which was quite messy. Later, I went grocery shopping to pick up a few things I needed for dinner. I made myself a salmon omelet, and it turned out really tasty. In the evening, I attended a university event at a bar in Schwedenplatz, which had happy hour from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., with draft beer and long drinks for only 2 euros. There, I was able to make some new friends, and we got along really well. After the party, we all headed to McDonald's for a great meal to cap off the night.

Sunshine, Spritz Parties, and Solo Rides: My Vienna Day

Image
Today, I had to wake up at 9:30 a.m. because my sister had something to do and couldn’t attend her online course, so I recorded it for her to watch later. I also tidied up her room a bit since it was a little messy. When she got back, she made me pasta for lunch to thank me, and it turned out really good. After lunch, I went to the gym for a back and biceps workout, followed by some cardio with a jump rope. Then I took a ride through the city in the beautiful 25°C sunny weather, cruising along the banks of the Danube, which was really nice. Later, I finally finished the Netflix series I’d been watching. In the evening, I saw there was a Spritz party on campus with lots of students, so I got dressed and decided to check it out. It was pretty nice, but since I didn’t have any friends there, I got bored quickly and ended up going back to the dorm to watch a movie.

A Fresh Cut and Unseen Streets: Discovering Vienna Off the Beaten Path

Image
This morning was much better than yesterday. I found a barbershop nearby and booked an appointment for 12:30 p.m. I arrived a bit early at 12:00 and grabbed some sushi for breakfast at a small restaurant nearby. When I got to the barbershop, the staff was super friendly and even offered me coffee. Throughout the haircut, the barber kept checking in to see if I was happy with it, and each time my answer was 'yes,' because I genuinely had no complaints. The place is called 'Perschia Barbershop,' and for my first haircut experience in Vienna, I was very pleased with the service. For lunch, I had a pizza I defrosted and baked in the oven, and afterward, I helped a friend carry some things to her room. This evening, while riding an electric scooter, I explored a part of the city that you don’t often see on social media—places with more of a edgy, urban vibe. I really enjoyed it because I want to know all sides of Vienna, not just the Instagrammable parts. I took some picture...

From a rough start to a great finish

Image
My day started off pretty bad. I woke up to a rainy morning and didn’t feel like doing anything. I got out of bed and decided to cook myself some eggs for breakfast, and they turned out great. But before I could eat them, I accidentally hit the plate with my hand, and it fell to the floor, shattering along with the eggs. When I opened the fridge to grab two more eggs, I realized I was out, so I ended up eating a slice of bread with cream cheese, salami, and some tomatoes instead. After I ate, I went to my sister’s room to wash her dishes because she didn’t have time due to her university work. I offered to help her out. Around 3 o’clock, I went with her to the airport to pick up a student from China who came here to study for a year. We brought her to the student dorm and helped her with all her bags. When I got back to the dorm, I headed to the gym for a workout and spent some time hitting the boxing bag. In the evening, I rode around the city on an electric scooter, visiting some bea...

From Dorm Chores to City Sights: A Snapshot of My Day

Image
This morning, I finally managed to sleep in a bit, until around 11 a.m. When I checked my phone, I saw a message from my sister asking if I could go buy her a charger. I searched for an electronics store and found one in a mall, which also had an Interspar where I did my grocery shopping. When I got back to the dorm, my sister and her friend came over, and we all cooked Orzo together. After lunch, I helped my sister’s friend carry her bags to her dorm. The bags were in an apartment in a really nice neighborhood. We packed up the bags and boxes full of stuff and ordered an Uber, which was barely spacious enough to fit everything. When I got back, I had to wash the lunch dishes, which were a lot, but I managed to get them done in a fairly short amount of time. In the evening, I went out in the city. I grabbed an electric scooter from Uber and rode it from sight to sight, taking photos of the most beautiful buildings and landmarks. I'll be posting those soon on my Instagram (@victor...

From Stadtpark to Mozart's House: A Perfect Vienna Sunday

Image
Yesterday evening, I went out in the city because I got bored being alone in the dorm. I took some pictures of Vienna's cars at night, so if you're interested, you can check them out on my Instagram (@victor_in_vienna) and also on my TikTok account (@victorinvienna). Today is Sunday, and besides the terraces and restaurants, almost everything is closed in Vienna. So, I decided to go for a walk through Stadtpark with my sister. On the way to the park, we stopped at a local bakery, where I had a slice of pizza, and my sister had a coffee. It was a sunny day, around 21°C—in my opinion, the best weather for going out and enjoying nature. I find it quite nice that stores in Vienna are closed on Sundays, as it gives a break from the whole consumerism thing and allows people to enjoy the city from a different perspective. For lunch, I made myself a wrap with burrata, avocado, tomatoes, mortadella, and eggs. After lunch, I did the dishes, laundry, and put everything back in place. In...

The Welcome Days are coming!

Image
Today, I woke up at 9 a.m. and went with my sister and her friend to do some grocery shopping because I needed avocados and wraps to make breakfast. I made a wrap with eggs, avocado, hummus, tomatoes, and salami—similar to the McDonald's wrap, but in my opinion, a little better because I made it myself. After that, I went to Stephansplatz to take some pictures for my Instagram (@victor_in_vienna) and to look for clothes. I randomly met a friend from my home country and spent some time with her visiting clothing stores. When I came back, I worked out at the dorm gym because I didn’t get the chance to sign up for a membership at a larger gym in the city. In the evening, I went with my sister and her friend to have dinner on campus, and we had a nice chat together. I also checked the university website and found the schedule for the "Welcome Days," which will take place from the 23rd to the 24th of September and continue until the 1st of October. This event consists of dai...

Exploring Vienna

Image
I start university on October 1st, so I have around 10-11 days to explore the city. That’s exactly what I did this morning. I woke up at 8:30, got on the subway, and headed to Taborstraße, where I had breakfast at McDonald's—a wrap with avocado, scrambled eggs, tomato, and bacon. Afterward, I visited a bookstore and bought a bestseller titled Think and Grow Rich , which I plan to read in the coming days. Then, I went to see the Votivkirche (which is shown on the screen) and decided to visit my university, which isn’t too far from the church. I took some pictures there that I’ll be posting on my Instagram page, @victor_in_vienna. After lunch, I started reading the book I bought earlier, and then I went to the gym at the student dorm for my daily workout. I’m considering getting a membership at a bigger gym with more equipment, as this one doesn’t have many machines. In the evening, I met up with my sister and her friend. We cooked dinner together, chatted, and made plans for the n...

Getting into University in Vienna

Image
Today, I moved to Vienna as an international student to study Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaften at the University of Vienna (UniWien). I took the entrance exam on August 29th, which consisted of 80 questions from a 150-page book that I had to study. Additionally, there were 18 word analogy exercises, followed by 8 matrix questions (not related to mathematics). I found out the same day that I got into the university, as only 715 people showed up for the exam, out of 970 available spots. After I got in, I spent the whole day in Vienna. I went to EBI, a really nice "all-you-can-eat" restaurant near Stephansplatz that serves sushi and other Asian dishes. In the evening, I visited Steffl Skybar and had a Moscow Mule cocktail. Fast forward to today—after moving in, I had to fill out some paperwork to prove that I am a student here and that I will be living in Vienna for the coming years. I also had an online interview, which consisted of presenting the documents requir...
